18 junctions in Alor Star to be renamed: Mayor

The Alor Star City Council (MBAS) is renaming 18 junctions in the city after Muslims leaders, Muslim caliphs and Kedah royal family members.

Mayor Datuk Mat Noh Ahmad in announcing this today said among the junctions involved are; Lebuhraya Darul Aman leading to Jalan Hutan Kampung junction will be renamed to Abu’l Hassan Sabit; Lebuhraya Darul Aman leading to Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah will be renamed to Al-Razi; Lebuhraya Darul Aman leading to Jalan Stadium will be renamed to Al-Batani; Lebuhraya Darul Aman leading to Jalan Putra will be renamed to Al-Khawarizmi.

Lebuhraya Darul Aman leading to Balai Seni/OCBC Bank/ Jalan Tunku Ibrahim will be renamed to Umar Khayyam, Lebuhraya Sultanah Bahiyah leading to Jalan Gangsa will be renamed to Ibnu Rusyd, Lebuhraya Sultanah Bahiyah leading to Jalan Putra will be renamed to Abu Musa Jabir; Lebuhraya Sultanah Bahiyah leading to Jalan Kuala Kedah will be renamed to Tunku Kudin; Lebuhraya Sultanah Bahiyah leading Lebuhraya Sultan Abdul Halim will be renamed Sheikh Abdus Samad Al-Falembani; Jalan Raja leading to Jalan Tunku Ibrahim will be renamed Jalan Al-Farabi; Lebuhraya Sultan Abdul Halim leading to Jalan Seberang Perak will be renamed to Laksamana Mahmud Shams.

Lebuhraya Sultan Abdul Halim junction leading to Jalan Kuala Kedah will be renamed to Wan Mat Saman; Jalan Langgar leading to North bound Alor Star Toll Plaza will be renamed to Ibnu Batutah; Jalan Kuala Kedah leading to Jalan Tok Pasai will be renamed to Tok Pasai; Jalan Kuala Kedah leading to Jalan Batas Paip will be renamed Tunku Abdullah; Jalan Kuala Kedah leading to Taman Sri Kota will be renamed to Tunku Long; Jalan Kuala Kedah leading to Taman Pelangi will be renamed to Tunku Muhammad Saad and Lebuhraya Darul Aman leading to Lebuhraya Sultanah Bahiyah will be renamed to Ibnu Sina.

Mat Noh said the city council was in the process of putting up the new signboards at the respective junctions and the new official names would take effect this September.

“The move is meant to honour the Muslim caliphs, Muslim leaders and royal family members,” he said in a press conference after signing a memorandum of understanding between the MBAS and Universiti Utara Malaysia.
